Observations .- The origin of this family is obscure. Henry T yey s, who
held Great Moulton, No rfolk, at the time of his d e ath, is menti on e d
as
dead in 1 212, and anothe r man of th e sa me name was g ranted the
ma no r of South Mi mms, Middlesex, i n 1 216. On 9 August in t h at ye ar

Tyeys a nd others were granted pro tection fo r themselves an d their
followe rs, and h e may have been on e of Ki ng John's mercenary capta i
ns.
HEN RY TYEYS in 1221 w as grante d lands in Ty warnhaile, Co rnw all, to
s ust ain hi m in the King's ser vic e, and he pr ob abl y acquired lan ds
in
De von at t h e same time, for in 12 23 th e sheriff o f that co. was
ordere
d
to seize Henry 's lands. I n 1224 h e wa s giv en 10 mark s to help him to
buy
a horse ; an d the a ppearance of h is n ame amo ng thosewho were grant
ed w
rits of pr otection in Mar ch 1225, for going to Gas c ony wit h Richard o
f
Cornwall , ma rks the be ginning of a close as soc iatio n of this fami ly
with
the Earl s of Cornwall. In 1230 h e was given t h e ma nor of G rendon
Un derwood, Bucks , in lie u of t he fee of 10 per annum w hic h he was
receiving fr om t he Cro w n; and mor e ro yal gifts were ma de to h i m i

an d 1240. The name o f his wife (d) an d the date of his deat h a r e not
