Marilda was born in 1858 in , , Kentucky, USA.1 Marilda's father was Charles Watkins and her mother was Samantha Harper or Hopper. Her paternal grandparents were James L. Watkins and Elizabeth Brunk. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Tapley, Nathan, Dixon, Thompson, Alecy and Emily. She was the second youngest of the seven children.-
