RAY MAIER DROWNS IN TURKEY CREEK
"Ray MAIER is drowned in Turkey Creek. Please come and help us get him out. His parents live on Seventh street at Portsmouth."
This was the message delivered at Butler's store by the excited companions of the drowned boy on Turkey Creek Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock.
The companions after giving the fatal message ran toward the creek. The boy had gone in swimming and had gotten beyond his depth.
The Times received the news of the drowning by phone.

Ray MAIER accompanied by several of his companions left here on bicycles Monday afternoon for an outing at Evans Grove. The unfortunate young boy is the thriteen year old son of William MAIER of East Seventh street who is propietor of the "Cornor Saloon" at Gay and Gallia streets.
Ray is an only child of Mr. and Mrs. MAIER. The father of the lad left immediately for Turkey Creek and stated to The Times before leaving he was confident it was his boy who had found a watery grave.
As soon as the news reached Butler's store men in the neighborhood rushed to the creek and with boats began a search for the body of the drowned lad. At 4:15 the body had not been found. It is said tha body sank in a deep pool opposite Evans' grove.
It was later learned that John PURDUM son of Judge PURDUM, James BREECE son of John T. BREECE and Carl BLAKEMEYER were Ray's companions when he met his death. All had been swimming and James and Ray started to pull a log across. Ray got hold of the log and started to clumb on top of it. James warned him to be careful. Then suddenly the log rolled and Ray fell under. He twice grabbed Carl by the arm then sank back. He came up again and grabbed BREECE by the wrist. James tried to pull him out but he was too heavy and had to release his hold. He sank for the third time. The boys swam ashore. Young PURDUM alone had remained on shore and ran to give the alarm.
The drowning occurred in a swimming hole on the south side of the pike. The water is said to be eight feet deep. The parents of the victim first learned of his sad fate through the Times.
