GOTZ, John August (umlauts over the O)
Died at his residence on W. 4th St. on Monday evening at 6:50 after a 4-week-long illness, complicated by pneumonia; he was born on 16 July 1856 in Rossdorf, in the Duchy of Sachsen-Meiningen; 39 years, 7 months and 16 days old; at the age of 5 his mother died; he served 3 years in the military after leaving school; after a year at home, he came here in October 1882 to his sister, Mrs. Philip RUHLMANN (umlauts over the U); he first ran a coal business with his brother-in-law, which was destroyed in the floods of 1883 and 1884; he then worked for H. EBERHARD and later in the brewery; in the last 6 years he was employed by the electric company; in 1884 he was married to Magdalene SABASTIAN; they had 3 children, of whom an 8-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl survive; also surviving him are his sister, Mrs. Philip RUHLMANN, and a brother, Ferdinand Friedrich, who arrived here last October from Germany, and 5 brother, 2 sisters, and a half sister from his father's 2nd marriage in Germany; the funeral was yesterday (Thursday) afternoon at the German Evangelical Church by Pastor MALLICK; the deceased was a member of the Knights of the Golden Eagle. *********************************************************
