Mrs. Amelia RUHLMAN
Mrs. Amelia RUHLMAN, wife of Philip RUHLMAN passed peacefully away last evening at 6:30 at the home of her daughter Mrs. Ida PETRY of Scioto Trail.
Mrs. RUHLMAN, whose maiden name was Amelia W. P. GOETZ was born Nov. 5th 1854 in the Dukedom of Sachsenmirmingen, Germany. Her mother died when she was five years old, and she came to this country, making the trip alone of 17 days on the ocean, landed at New York reaching her uncle, Christopher GOETZ, at Delaware, Ohio, April 17th 1871.
On July 21st, 1875, at Delaware, Ohio she was married to Mr. Philip RUHLMAN, to which union 6 children were born, one dying in infancy in 1884. The five surviving her are Ida, (Mrs. P. W. PETRY) Scioto Trail, R. Charles, Fred A., Elmer O., and Walter E. RUHLMAN. Thirteen grandchildren also survive, all of this city.
Mrs. RUHLMAN came with her husband to Portsmouth in 1878, they locating at Corner of Third and Market streets. She was a resident of Portsmouth the remainder of her life except for about five years she and her husband made their home in Detroit with their son, Elmer O. RUHLMAN. She has one brother in St. Louis, Ferdinand I. GOETZ, one brother John August GOETZ and also has two sisters who live in this city March 1896, and three brothers in Germany, from whom she had not heard during the war. she also has relatives in Delaware, Ohio, California and Minnesota.
She had been in poor health since last October at which time she fell and broke her arm. She, however, was not confined to her bed but about three weeks when the end came peacefully Monday afternoon, June 30th at 6:30 o'clock, the tired soul broke through its casement of clay and took its flight to her Maker. She was a member of the German Evangelical church of this city, for years active in the Ladies' Aid Society of the congregation. She was also a member of Louisa Lodge of the Haru Gari, a charter member of both Pocahontas Lodge of Red Men and the Tribe of Ben Hur.
Mr. and Mrs. RUHLMAN organized the local Tribe of Ben Hur. Had she lived until November 5th this year she would have been 65 years old. She had many friends and acquaintances in this city and in Detroit who will grieve to learn of her death.
She was a firm believer in the Golden Rule and never lost an opportunity of doing good when the opportunity presented itself but she did so quietly and without show, realizing that if she could minister unto the least of these she ministered unto her Lord, making of her a noble typle of womanhood, a tender and sacrificing wife, a loving and charitable mother, and a friend whom all loved to honor.
The funeral will be from the home of Scioto Trail at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, July 3rd. Rev. S. Lindon MEYER officiating.
