Ambrose was born in 1839 in , Hardin, Kentucky, USA.1 Ambrose's father was Sylvester Boarman and his mother was Ann Cecelia Or Sealy Hagan. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Or James Boarman and Catherine Edelen; his maternal grandparents were Robert F. Hagan and Christina Dyer. He had two brothers and three sisters, named James H, Francis C., Mary Catherine, Sarah Ellen and Josephine. He was the third oldest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Susan Elizabeth.
