He is married to Catharine Elizabeth Helsel. There was n o road nearer him than the Douglass farm. He had no cabin , and built a pen of poles in which to keep his goods fo r a while. The wolves were plenty in the neighborhood then , and Sunday was the regular hunting day. Mr. S. had to g o twice to Blair county to get grinding done. His childre n were: Mary E., m. to Reuben Boring; George H., m. to Mar y Johnston; Peter, m. to Sophia Duncan; John. m. to Margare t Dishong; Joseph W., m. to Sarah Hudson; William T., m. t o Margaret Douglass; Philip H., m. to Rebecca Engle; Elizab eth, m. to David Piper; and Eve, d. The children are mostl y settled near the old home. William T. served three year s in the 78th Pennsylvania volunteers. Philip was in the si gnal corps. George H. had one son in the war, badly wounded . Our subject helped to raise the first log schoolhouse a t the Cherry Tree. He thinks there never was any school i n it, and it was never finished.
