Louis I 'The Pious', Emperor Of The Holy Roman Empire in 81
4 succeeded his father Charlemagne. In 817, he arranged fo
r the succession after his death by dividing the empire amo
ng his three sons. After his first wife died, Louis marrie
d again, and a
fourth son, Charles, was born. Louis redivided his empire i
n 829 in order to give Charles a share. The older sons rese
nted the new division and revolted. Louis was removed fro
m the throne in 833, but was restored the next year. The bi
tter struggle
between his sons continued until Louis died.
The name Louis means 'famous warrier'.
