His paternal grandparents were Edward (Richard) Martyn and Judith UPHAM; his maternal grandparents were Thomas ESTEN and Ann Thomas. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Melatiah, John, Robert, Manasseh, Ebenezer, Jemima, Ann, Joanna and Judith. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
