William "the Great" was born in 1270 in Radcliffe Tower, Lancashire, England.  William "the Great"'s father was Richard Radclyffe and his mother was Margaret le Boteler.  His paternal grandparents were Robert de Radclyffe and Amibil de Trafford; his maternal grandparents were Ralph III le Boteler and Maud Pantulf. He had three brothers and a sister, named Robert, John, Richard and Margery.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
