Sir John was born in 1252 in Tichmarsh, Northamptonshire, England. Sir John's father was John Lovel and his mother was Maud de Sydenham. His paternal grandparents were John Lovel and Katherine Basset; his maternal grandfather was Sir William de Sydenham. He had a sister named Maud. He was the older of the two children.
