Sir John was born about 1205 in Shireland, Derbyshire, England.  Sir John's father was Sir Henry De Grey and his mother was Isolda (Iseude) Bardolf.  His paternal grandparents were John de Grey and Elena De Clare; his maternal grandparents were Hugh Bardolf and Isobel Aquillion. He had six brothers and a sister, named Richard, Hugh, William, Robert, Archbishop of York, Henry and Joan.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
