General Notes

*Hester Wright m. Samuel Marshfield on Feb. 18, 1650/1 in Springfield, Hampden Co., MA. Hester was b. 1634? in England and D. April 3, 1664 in Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.  Samuel was b. Abt 1626? in Exeter, Devonshire, England and D. May 8/12, 1692 in Springfield, Hampden Co., MA. A tailor, he was at Springfield, MA by 1648. Selectman for 13 years; deputy 1680, 1683 and 1684.  His parents were Thomas Marshfield and Mercy ?.  Hester and Samuel had at least 8 children, Mercy (died in infancy)), Mercy Wright (died in infancy)), Thomas (died young)), Sarah Wright (died in infancy)), Sarah (m. William Holton Jr., had at least 1 child, Mary (died young, lived in Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA, m. Ebenezer Strong Jr, a descendant is Pres. Franklin Delano Roosevelt), *Note-Some researchers have Sarah and William Holton Jr. having a daughter Rachel. Most researcher, though have Rachel's parents as William Holton and Mary Winche)), Samuel Jr. (died a child)), Hannah (m. Lt. Joseph Bodurtha/Bedortha, the title of Lt. given to Joseph in Dr Lathrop's parish records, indicates that he must have been actively engaged in the earlier wars of the Colony, had at least 8 children, Hannah (m. Jonathan Smith), Joseph Jr. (died young), Mary (m. Benjamin Smith Jr.), Esther (died in infancy), Desire (m. Samuel Smith), John (m. Ruth Lee), Jacob (died in infancy) and Martha (m. Job Smith)) and Abilene (died young, m. Thomas Gilbert III/IV?, took the oath of allegiance at Springfield 1678, is described as a wild youth, he was "presented" by a jury Sep 26, 1682 for hunting on at Qaubaug (Brookfield) on the Lord's Day. August 19, 1688, he was sent by Col. Pynchon as a soldier to Qaubaug; and Sept. 21 was sent again to help build a fort there. He removed to Brookfield in the spring of 1691, and in September was appointed constable. He took an active part in furthering settlement of the place, and his name appears on numerous petitions to the General Court. He returned with his young family to Springfield in 1696 or 1697 where he died, had 8? children, Thomas IV/V?(Capt., moved to Brookfield, Worcester Co., MA in 1691. He became a leading man in civil affairs; was a Town Clerk 1718- 1753, Captain of the Militia, Justice of the Peace and town treasurer. Owned 480/4 acres of  land, m. #1 Martha Barnes; m. #2 Mercy Gilbert), Samuel (died in infancy/child?), unknown name (twin, died in infancy), Sarah (twin, died in infancy), Jonathan (moved to NC, m. Margary/Margery/Mercy Searles), Samuel, John (died in infancy), and Ebenezer (died in infancy)).(*Note-Samuel Marshfield married again to Catherine Chapin the same year that Hester Wright died and had 4 more children, Josiah (m. Rachel Gilbert), Esther/Hester (m. Ephraim Colton), unnamed child (died in infancy) and Margaret (m. Ebenezer Parsons))
