Jean was born in August 1647 in Trois Rivieres, Quebec.1   Jean's father was Guillaume Dit Tranchemontagne Pepin and his mother was Jeanne Mechin.  His paternal grandparents were Pierre Dit Pépin Lafond and Françoise Prieur; his maternal grandparents were Jean Mechin and Suzanne Larose. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Jacques, Guillaume, Pierre Dit Laforce, Etienne, Joseph, Louis, Marie, Jeanne, Madeline, Elizabeth, Marguerite and Marie-Ursule.  He was the second oldest of the thirteen children.
