Ann was born in 1789 in , , North Carolina. Ann's father was Joseph Perryman and her mother was Nancy Gates. Her paternal grandparents were Isaac Perryman and Margaret; her maternal grandparents were Philip Gates and Sarah Mariah Wright. She had nine brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, John, Joseph Wilson, Isaac, Edmund, Phillip Gates, Allen, Jacob, Ransom, Margaret and Elizabeth. She was the second oldest of the twelve children.-
