Alan was born in 1155 in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England.  Alan's father was Sheriff Thomas Basset and his mother was Adeliza de Dunstanville.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert Basset and Edith D'Oyly; his maternal grandparents were Alan de Dunstanville and Emma deLangetot. He had a brother named Thurstan.  He was the younger of the two children. He had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Fulco, Alan, Thomas, Gilbert, Gilbert, Isabel and Isabel.  He died at the age of 78 in 1233 in Headington, Oxfordshire, England.  He was buried in Sheriff of Rutland.
