Alan was born in 1148 in Woking, Mapledurham, Wycombe.  Alan's father was Sheriff Thomas Basset and his mother was Alice De Dunstanville.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert Basset and Edith D'Oyly; his maternal grandparents were Alan Reinald De Dunstanville and Emma De Langetot. He had three brothers and a sister, named Fulco, Thomas, Gilbert and Isabel.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thurstan, Alan, Gilbert and Isabel.  He died at the age of 85 in 1233 in Headington, Oxfordshire, England.

‌Alan and Alice were married in a religious ceremony about 1180 in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England.  They had eight sons and seven daughters, named Philip, Gilbert, Fulk, William, Thomas, Fulk, Gilbert, Philip, Aline Alicia, Hawise, Alice, Katherine, Aline, Hawise and Basset.
