Mathilde de was born about 1039 in Conteville,,France.  Mathilde de's father was Harlevin (Herlouin) Viscomte de Conteville and her mother was Harlette de Falaise.  Her paternal grandparents were Jean of Tonnbridge De Conteville and Jean , wife of John of Tonsburgh UNKNOWN; her maternal grandmother was Doda Of Falaise. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Odo (Eudes) of, Robert Count de, Odo de, Emma de, Miss de and Muriel de.  She was the second youngest of the seven children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Ralph of, William "The Conqueror" of and Adelaide.
