Her paternal grandparents were William Horton Thomas and Martha Frances Ford; her maternal grandparents were John Alexander, Sr. Smith and Nancy Logan. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William Houston, Jr., Arthur Patrick, John Sebron, Arron Bartley, Nancy Scottie, Anette, Clara and Martha Ester. She was the oldest of the nine children.
