Walter B. Spradley 
Walter B. was born on September 11th, 1892 in Mansfield, Tx.1 Walter B.'s father was James Willoughby, Sr. Spradley and his mother was Emma Brock Modisette. His paternal grandparents were James John Spradley and Penelopy Frances Todd. He had two sisters named Mernerva Univae and Frances Mae. He was the oldest of the three children. He had two half-brothers named Wayne David and Sidney Webster. He died at the age of 89 on September 24th, 1981 in Sherman, Grayson Co., TX. Farmer and migrant worker at early age. He was then employed at Hardwicke
and Etter & Company, Sherman, Texas constructing gen machinery. He then
became a General Contractor for most of his life. For a short time when
he was younger he was a barber.
I remember Walter "Pop" telling of the time, one fall, he and his brother
Sidney followed the cotton crop out threw West Texas, picking cotton and
working in the cotton gins. When the season was over in early winter,
just before Christmas, he and his brother started home with the money
they had saved. They were headed home in Grayson County, Texas. Just
before starting home, Sindey bought himself a brand new pair of shoes.
That night, a very cold night, they hopped a freight train for a ride
home. Not to long after settling down in the back of a box car for the
long, cold ride home, a voice from the other end of the box car said,
"Get your hands up boys". My grandfather said all he could see, by moon
light, was this big shinny gun this guy had pointed at the two of them.
After they gave the guy all their money and he started to leave, he had
second thoughts and turned to Sindey and said, "Take them new shoes
off". They road home for Christmas in a cold box car, with no money to
show for three months hard work and Sidney was bare footed. Remembered

Walter at one time was a barber in Van Alstyne and later moved to
Pottsboro near Perrin Field and the Texhoma Dam. Later moved to Sherman
where B. Elmer Spradley visited him in 1978. During the 1930's he was
employed by Hardwicke-Etler & Company in Sherman which was constructing
Gin Machinery. In early 1940 he became a general contractor until he
retired.
