John Elmore Hall 
John Elmore was born on March 30th, 1842 in Ellerslie, Autauga Co., AL.1 John Elmore's father was Bolling II Hall and his mother was Mary Louisa Crenshaw. His paternal grandparents were Bolling I Hall and Jane Abercrombie; his maternal grandparents were Abner Crenshaw and Charlotte Perry Elmore. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named Bolling III, Crenshaw, James Abercrombie, Thomas Brown, Hines Holt, Joseph Eugene, Franklin Abner, Charles Edward, Mary Louisa, Laura June and Caroline Sophia. He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 39 on January 27th, 1882 in Montgomery Co., AL. He was buried in Hall - Rawlinson Cemetery, Elmore Co., AL.1 1 General Notes

59. Ala Regt In Trenches
Oct 6th 1864
From John Hall
"It is now half after 3 oclock P.M. & one of Capt. Crumplers men (James
Ray) is to be shot at 4 oclock. The time is near at hand His crime was,
desertion & cowardice. I am sorry for the boy for I do not really think
he has any sense. He will be shot here in the trenches before the Regt -
I would give almost anything to be absent when it is done. Though he
deserves death, I dont want to see him shot."
At the end of the same letter:
Oct 6th 1864
4 oclock PM
"Father I have just witnessed a sight which I pray I may never again be
called upon to see. Ray was shot to death by a detail of 15 men made for
the purpose. A minister prayed with him & he was tied to a stake with his
hands behind him a white cloth put over his face & the order given the
detail to fire upon him. Several balls to effect, but a few moments after
life not being extinct entirely. He was again shot, the last trial
finishing life & was a sad sight"
