William was born in 1146 in Rockley, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England.  William's father was John "The Marshal" FitzGilbert , of Rockley and his mother was Sibyl de Salisbury.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert le Gilbert , of Winterbourne/, of Winterbourne, King's Marshal and Miss de Venuz; his maternal grandparents were Walter of Salisbury , Sheriff of Wiltshire and Sibyl de Chaworth. He had a brother and two sisters, named John le, Maud and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 73 on May 14th, 1219 in Caversham, Henley, Oxfordshire, England.  He was buried in Temple Church, London, England.


William's family with Isabel de Clare , Countess of Pembroke

‌William and Isabel de were married in a religious ceremony in August 1189 in London, Middlesex, England.  They had a son and five daughters, named William, Sibyl, Maud, Eva, Isabel and Joan.
