Margaret was born in 1286 in Thomond, Connaught, County Clare, Ireland.  Margaret's father was Thomas De Clare Lord of Thomond and her mother was Julianne FitzMaurice FitzGerald.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard I De Clare Earl of Gloucester and Maud De Lacy Countess de Lincoln; her maternal grandparents were Maurice FitzMaurice FitzGerald Lord Offaly and Emmeline De Longespee. She had a sister named Maud.  She was the younger of the two children.  She died at the age of 47 in 1333 in Castle Badlesmere, Kent.
