HOLDERS of the CASTLE of BERKELEY (VI)

ROBERT DE BERKELEY, feudal LORD OF BERKELEY, son and heir, who "may bee called Robert the Rebellious," born about 1165, educated at the Court of Henry II, and was knighted. He had to pay £1,000 in 1191, for livery of his inheritance. On 27 November 1198, and on 18 April 1200, he had confirmation of his charters of Berkeley. Was a Justice Itinerant, 1208. He sided -with the rebellious Barons against King John,.was pardoned in 1214, but again rebelled and was excommunicated, though restored in 1216-17, for a fine of £966, to all his lands, excepting Berkeley. He married, 1stly, before 11 June 1200, Julian, daughter of Robert DE PONT DE L'ARCHE, by Maud, sister of William (MARSHAL), the elder, EARL OF PEMBROKE, and daughter of John FitzGilbert, styled also John the MARSHAL. She died 15 November 1217, and was buried at St. Augustine's Bristol. He married, 2ndly, in 1218, Lucy. He died s.p., aged about 55, and was buried at St. Augustine's, " in a monck's cowle." His widow, who married Hugh DE GURNAY, died 18 January 1234, and was buried at St. Augustiiie's.  [Complete Peerage II:126, XIV:87, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
