Vernon's father was Russell Sowders and his mother was Ruby Floene Smith. His paternal grandparents were Vernon Sowders and Zelphie Arney; his maternal grandparents were Perry Smith and Ruth Etta Glascoe. He had a brother and a sister, named Joseph Mark and Vicky Ann. He had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Raymond Eugene, Joseph Mark, Living, Michael Dee, Vernon, Kay, Living, Vicky Ann and Living.-
