Benjamin "Bennie" was born on February 13th, 1922 in Monroe County, Indiana. Benjamin "Bennie"'s father was Benjamin W. Shields and his mother was Bertha Hyde. His paternal grandparents were Isaac Shields and Izella Todd. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Clarence, James E., Robert H., Beatrice, Jennie and Helen. He was the second youngest of the seven children.-
