John was born about 1786 in NC. John's father was Gaspar Koons and his mother was Mercy Presnell. His paternal grandparents were Hans Diebold Cuntz and Margaret Suan Dick. He had three brothers and three sisters, named George K., Devault, Gasper, Martha, Mary and Girl. He had eight half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Son, William, Nathan, Joseph, Jessie, Samuel, Jeremiah, Benjamin, Susanna, Hannah and Rachel.-
