John's father was Henry Clay and his mother was Mary Mitchell. His paternal grandparents were Charles Clay and Hannah Wilson; his maternal grandparents were William Mitchell and Elizabeth Innes. He had three brothers named William Mitchell, Charles and Henry II.-
