Mary Ann was born about 1861 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Mary Ann's father was James Rufus Wright and her mother was Katherine Ault. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Wright and Anna Beal; her maternal grandfather was Ault. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Willie Bunch, Katherine, Martha Or Mattie and Susan. She was the oldest of the seven children.-
