Martha Or Mattie was born about 1869 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Martha Or Mattie's father was James Rufus Wright and her mother was Katherine Ault. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Wright and Anna Beal; her maternal grandfather was Ault. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Willie Bunch, Mary Ann, Katherine and Susan. She was the third youngest of the seven children.-
