Nancy Jane was born in 1838 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Nancy Jane's father was John Winstead and her mother was Fanny Lawson. Her paternal grandparents were Ezekiel Winstead and Mourning Watkins. She had nine brothers and three sisters, named William, Malin, Gaines, James, Madison, Amos Jackson, John Wilson, Fuller Willis, John Mallot, Orlena, Mary Ann and Sarah. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Rufas and Laura.-
