Margaret was born in 1834 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Margaret's father was Hugh Walker and her mother was Frances Grantham Rogers. Her maternal grandparents were Joseph Rogers and Mary Amis. She had three brothers and a sister, named James K., Joseph, Thomas and Elvira Or Ella. She was the third oldest of the five children.-
