Philip was born about 1758 in , Halifax, NC. Philip's father was John Spears and his mother was Christian Benton. His paternal grandparents were James Spears and Elizabeth Coker; his maternal grandfather was John Benton. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Moses, Harris, Benton, Rosannah and Abselah. He was the second youngest of the seven children.-
