Clifton was born on June 27th, 1914 in Of, Sullivan, Tennessee. Clifton's father was Allie Anderson Shoemaker and his mother was Cora Mandy Mae Rutledge. His paternal grandparents were John Mack Shoemaker and Nancy Melinda Marion; his maternal grandparents were Richard Baxter Rutledge and Hannah Lillie Amanda Shoemaker. He had a sister named Pauline Frances. He was the older of the two children. He died at the age of 64 on September 12th, 1978.-
