Martha's father was Benjamin Shipley and her mother was Nancy Jane Copus. Her paternal grandparents were Joshua Shipley and Mary Strickler. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Joshua, Nathan, Benjamin, John C., Christian Elizabeth, Mary Jane, Sarah and Selina.-
