David Godsey was born in 1872 in Scott County, Virginia.  David Godsey's father was John Childers Shipley and his mother was Nancy Martitia Green.  His paternal grandparents were Caleb Shipley and Elizabeth Galloway. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Samuel Augustus, John James, William Rufus, Sarah, Mary, Nancy Jane and Ida Almira.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 65 in 1937 in Wise County, Virginia.
