Tempa was born about 1792 in , Greensville, Virginia. Tempa's father was John Shehorn and her mother was Crissy Cato. Her paternal grandparents were Wilson Shehorn and Mrs. Shehorn; her maternal grandparents were John Cato and Elizabeth Moss. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Henry, George Daniel, Martha Or Patsey and Julia. She was the second youngest of the five children.-
