Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Shawhan and Sarah Ewalt; her maternal grandparents were George Ruch and Sarah Anderson. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Joseph R., George H., John, Daniel, Margaret E., Helena and Ann R.. She was the oldest of the eight children.-
