John Rufus was born on December 16th, 1848 in Rogersville, Hawkins, Tennessee. John Rufus' father was Robert D. Self and his mother was Judith Roarke. His paternal grandparents were Jesse Self and Agnes Dobson. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas B., Josiah Franklin, Michael V., William R., Sarah M., Nancy J., Martha A. and Cynthia M.. He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.-
