M. C. was born in 1871 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee. M. C.'s father was Robert J. Rutledge and her mother was Catherine Fansler. Her paternal grandparents were Emanuel Rutledge and Sarah Kate Wilson; her maternal grandparents were David Fansler and Mary Shipley. She had four brothers and three sisters, named B. L., E. B., Robert Cornelius, Edward Lea, R. B., N. E. and Sarah Elizabeth. She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.-
