John was born on January 5th, 1765 in , , Virginia. John's father was George Ridley and his mother was Elizabeth Maria Weatherford. His maternal grandparents were Major Weatherford and Elizabeth Edwards. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Beverly, George, William, Lettie, Martha Or Patsy, Elizabeth and Sarah. He was the third oldest of the eight children. He had six half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Vincent, Thomas, Moses, James, Samuel Jones, Henry, Abigail and Winifred.-
