Nancy was born on March 5th, 1838 in , , Tennessee. Nancy's father was Uriah Pennington and her mother was Frances Mary Plumlee. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Anthony W., William, Dekalb, Colbery Emory, Leroy, Luvenia, Mary Or Polly, Martha Ann and Elizabeth. She was the third oldest of the ten children.
