Pleasant was born in 1873 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Pleasant's father was James Orville Murrell and his mother was Amanda Lawson. His paternal grandparents were Pleasant Murrell and Susan Trent; his maternal grandparents were Banks Lawson and Thersey Parvin. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Palestine, Dalzell Harrison, James, Marilla and Elizabeth. He was the third youngest of the six children.-
