Sarah E. was born in 1868 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Sarah E.'s father was Curren Lawson and her mother was Mary. Her paternal grandparents were Banks Lawson and Thersey Parvin. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, George, Thomas, Paralee, Amanda and Valera. She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
