Mary Ann was born in 1820 in Virginia. Mary Ann's father was John Kite and her mother was Delia Armentrout. Her paternal grandparents were Martin Kite and Catharine Kiser; her maternal grandparents were John Armentrout Jr. and Anna Marie Baker. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named William, Jackson, Harriet, Ann, Elizabeth, Amanda V., Sarah Jane, Frances C. and Angelina. She was the third oldest of the ten children.-
