Martin was born in 1766 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Martin's father was William Kite and his mother was Catharine Smith. His paternal grandparents were John Wendel Kite and Hannah Medlicott. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, Adam, Reuben, Benjamin, John and Elizabeth.-
