Mattie L. was born in 1870 in Benton, TN. Mattie L.'s father was John Hale and her mother was Sarah Ann Massey. Her paternal grandparents were Jesse Hale and Malinda Bussell; her maternal grandparents were Garrett Massey and Lovina Cropper. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William Daniel, James W., Martha and Sophronia. She was the second youngest of the five children.-
