I. Elisa was born in 1838 in , Greene, Tennessee.  I. Elisa's father was Abraham Dyer and her mother was Docia Coatney.  Her paternal grandparents were Abraham Dyer and Ruth; her maternal grandfather was George Coatney. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named John S., George Washington, Abraham, Samuel A., William S., Solomon M., Stephen C., Ruth and Elizabeth.  She was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
