Jane was born on October 23rd, 1796 in Tennessee.  Jane's father was Edward Cox and her mother was Sarah Meredith.  Her paternal grandfather was John Cox. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Meredith, Joshua, Jacob, Abraham, Samuel, John, Elizabeth and Catherine.  She was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
