Mary was born in 1534 in , Cranbrook, Kent, England. Mary's father was William Courthope and her mother was Joan Sharpy. Her maternal grandparents were John Sharpy and Agnes Hendley. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Richard, Robert, Walter, Agnes, Joan, Rose and Margaret. She was the third oldest of the eight children.-
